His first band was Royal Buckley Town Band, starting on second horn. George showed great potential and developed a particularly expressive sound and it was not long before he acquired the Solo Horn chair of both the junior and senior Band.

George moved to Point of Ayr under the baton of Graham Jones, who was George's former Brass teacher, and in 1981 played Blitz in his debut National Brass Band Championship Finals at the Royal Albert Hall

In 1985 he went on to Foden OTS under Howard Snell on Solo Horn for four years. In this period the Band gained titles such as "Granada Band of the Year" and "Yeovil Entertainment Champions", and was runners-up in both the National Finals and the British Open.

1998 led to a career move for George to the sunny coast of California for two years working in the Aircraft industry, and then onto Europe . In 1991 George returned to England and could not wait to start playing again, and so took up the invitation of Solo Horn with the famous Williams Fairey Band in Stockport . After a season with Fairey's he then joined Sellers Band under Philip McCann. Now George was working in Nottingham for an Aircraft subcontracting manufacturer, with four good years at Sellers joined NSK-RHP Ransome Band along side his identical twin brother John! In 2000 George became the Band's Solo Horn and also Chairman.

During his stay with Ransomes, the band was placed 2nd in the National Championships and was Midlands Area Champions twice and completed tours of Tokyo Japan , Iowa USA and xxxx France .

In 2006 George went back to Fodens (now known as Foden Richardson Band) on Solo Horn and enjoyed playing solos with the band in many concerts all over the UK .

Whilst at Fodens, the band won the North West Area Championships 2006, 2007, 2008, the English National Championships 2006, All England International Masters Championships 2007.

The end of 2007 saw another career move for George and this time working for Marshall Aerospace at Cambridge . Here George has taken up working as Assistant Conductor (March 2008) of the Waterbeach Brass band and is also Co-Principal French Horn with the RAF Wyton Voluntary Band.
