Band History

Early in 1978, Maureen and Wally Neville approached John and Beryl Few with the idea of forming Waterbeach Brass. The first band practice was held in Maureen's kitchen with the following members; the late John Few and Wally Neville on Euphonium, Beryl Few and Maureen Neville on Baritone, Mike Neville and Andrew Morford on Cornet and Lee Morford on Trombone.  All had previously played with Haddenham.

The first Committee meeting was held on the 13th April 1978.   Within a few years of formation the band were thirty strong, had fifteen juniors and had qualified for the nationals in London.

Since that time, the Band has become one of Cambridge's premier brass bands.  The Band was crowned Cambridgeshire Champion Band in 1991 and in 2000 was conferred as Ely Riverside Entertainment Champion. Since the band's inception, the late John Few and co-founder Maureen Neville have devoted much of their time to the Junior Band.  In 1999, Maureen retired from the Band to concentrate on this activity.

At the Christmas concert in 1998 John Few was made a life member of the band. John will be remembered for the warmth of his personality, generosity of spirit and for his unstinting commitment to encourage young musicians.

In 2004, Waterbeach Brass took first place in their section of the London & Southern Counties Region of the National Brass Band Championships held in Stevenage.  There was strong competition from a large turnout of 21 Fourth Section bands from 14 counties in the South East England.
