WATERBEACH BRASS CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

1. POLICY STATEMENT

Waterbeach Brass is an organisation for brass players of all ages and levels of ability. We believe it is always unacceptable for a child to experience abuse of any kind and recognise that it is our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all the children involved in our organisation. We recognise that all children have the right to protection from all types of harm or abuse and that the welfare of the child is paramount. We believe that working in partnership with children, parents and carers is essential in promoting young people's welfare and that all members of the band have a responsibility to report any concerns to the appointed Child Protection Officer.

This policy applies to all members of Waterbeach Brass, including the committee, paid staff and volunteers acting on behalf of the band.

We will seek to safeguard children by :-
1. Valuing, listening to and respecting them.
2. Adopting child protection guidelines through the procedures outlined below.
3. Recruiting staff safely.
4. Involving parents and children appropriately.

2. THE PURPOSE OF THE POLICY

The purpose of the policy is to provide protection for the children who play with the band, and to provide guidance on procedures that the band should follow in the event that they suspect a child may be experiencing, or is at risk of, harm. It is also to ensure that the band provides an environment free from bullying, and that follows the good practice guidelines set out in the policy.

3. GOOD PRACTICE GUIDELINES

Adults will be required to follow these good practice guidelines:-
1. Work in an open environment wherever possible.
2. Treat all young people equally with respect and dignity.
3. Involve parents/carers whenever possible.
4. Obtain parental consent for activities away from the band room.
5. Give constructive feedback not negative criticism.
6. Recognise differences in the developmental needs and capacity of young people.
7. Empower children to share in decision making process where they are involved.
8. Provide an example of good conduct.

Each child should be accompanied by a parent when attending concerts or band events, and where this is not possible should have person 'in loco parentis' designated by the child's parent/carer.

4. RESPONDING TO ALLEGATIONS AND REPORTING CONCERNS

It is not the responsibility of anyone at Waterbeach Brass to decide if child abuse has taken place, but there is a responsibility to act on any concerns. Any concerns should be first reported to the designated Child Protection Officer (Pam O'Connor) who will liaise with the Chairman and/or Musical Director to ensure appropriate action is taken. This may include referring the allegation to Social Services who will provide further advice.

5. CONFIDENTIALITY

Every effort will be made to ensure confidentiality is maintained and information handled on a need to know basis.

6. PHOTOGRAPHY POLICY

Photographs of band members may appear on the website, Waterbeach Brass Facebook page and local newspapers. Members and under 18s who wish not to be named or included in any public photography/publicity should fill in the form below stating their wishes.

7. AGREEMENT
